Rainbow CAKE?!

Say whaaa? You heard me.

Today is my best friend's birthday. This pretty much means that something rainbow needs to happen and it needs to happen fast. I saw this cake on Whisk Kid's blog, to say I underestimated the intricacy would be an understatement in and of itself. You can find the recipe (and accurate instructions on how to make the buttercream) here.

I started at 8:00 at night and only had my phone laying around, lackluster pictures to follow.

FIRST! I whipped up the batter, which contained the first 2 sticks of butter (there's 8 in the whole shebang.)

SECOND! I separated the batter into six different bowls (Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet. No one actually likes indigo, anyway) and dyed them with gel food coloring. I wish they had been more vibrant, but at the same time I know food coloring sometime has a flavor and I definitely didn't want that.

THIRD! After baking each layer for 15 minutes, I wrapped each mini cake in Saran Wrap and popped it in the fridge. I only have two 9-inch cake pans, so it took me give-or-take an hour to bake all six cakes. Only the yellow layer broke, wee!

FOURTH! I made the buttercream. There are no pictures of this process because, OH JEEBUS, it took forever. For my first homemade frosting, I suppose it was good but it wasn't as smooth as I would have liked it to have been. Everyone said it tasted good, so oh well!

FIFTH?! Stacking and spreading the frosting. As you can see, my frosting wasn't very smooth. I started with purple on the bottom and worked my way up. I also pieced the yellow cake baffck together. I love that you can see the inspiration in the background. Obviously, mine was the questionable cousin.

SIXTH!! Completed the frosting and decorated the cake. Birthday girl REALLY wanted a cake shaped like breasts, alas I don't own a breast shaped pan and I didn't really want to store a boob shaped cake in my parent's refrigerator. AWKWARD.

NOM! Surprise rainbow! If you happen to be wondering why the cake has been cut into but the candles have yet to be lit, my girlfriend wanted an early afternoon cake snack. :P

Where's the magic?

I'm feeling rather Scroogy this Christmas Eve. I wish I still felt the magic.

Halloween Nails

In the past year I've really gotten "in" to doing my nails. It mostly went along with trying to stop myself from biting them off whenever I had a nervous fit. I'm still not broken of putting my hands in my mouth, BUT! I can now paint either hand with little trouble! I'd say that's an accomplishment. I have also acquired so MUCH nail polish. All my friends refer to it as an "obsession" Pff. Everyone's gotta have a hobby, right?

I know Halloween has come and gone, but I figured I'd start with what I had.

I saw these adorable little Frankenstein nails on a youtube guru's channel, I think her name is goldiestarling. I was so in love with that little guy, so sad when I had to remove them.
I used a Cosmetic Arts polish in Jade for the skin, a random black and a random white for the rest!

Next up was spiderwebs! I used Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear in Wet Cement and a random black to make the webs. I got the most comments on this, I really love how Wet Cement looks on me.

'Till next time, folks!

Tryin' Somethin' New

I started this blog over a year ago. And of course, by started I mean I opened the account and forgot about it. Recently, I've been wanting an outlet. Something to just pour all the excess in my brain into. Guess this is gonna be it. I'll say right now I'm not the best writer, I try to use correct grammar and punctuation but sometimes I just fail. Happens to the best of us, right?

Christmas is closing in on us, can't say I feel it in the general public, though. Everyone's so grumpy. My honey and I have already exchanged gifts though, part of the reason this blog came to my mind. She gave me this beautiful camera I can use for this! My gift to her was a cheesemaking kit that I thought was going to go off without a hitch since she's a cheese fanatic but, man, I was wrong. Cheese is so finnicky. IT breaks my heart to see her try and try and it not work out.

Tonight on the tube is Sarah Palin's Alaska. I had to watch it. Like a train wreck kind of draw to it, you know? It's actually NOT that bad, but I must say, I could never be a hunter. Gutting all those animals, watching them go down when they take a hit? Nuh-uh, not me.

I wonder if anyone will read this. Hmm...
